Same Ole Mistakes Made Over & Over

This article from 1990 is relevant to Town Council decision making in 2006 as they prepare to study the Town police building expansion for $120,000. No one here is against needed expansion, but not having long range vision is a severe problem in Vienna government. It is obvious to me that proper planning was not done to accommodate growth in our police force. Now we are going to spend a ton of money to figure out how to fix this. Does any of this surprise me? No.

That is exactly what we have been discussing before the Council now for the last 2-3 years. They have no plan and it's is obvious they don't want to do anything that will provide for Vienna's future problems and future growth.

What a way to run a Town. They act as if this was all a hobby or special club to bring attention, news, and throwing out the first ball...

Those are all nice, but those are NOT what we need here in Vienna. We need real solutions for real problems and so far we get business as usual.

We need LEADERSHIP.

We need LEADERSHIP.

Agreed. Honest, Progressive Leadership! Consider this article in the June 2006 newsletter about not dumping into our Town waterways. And then look at this plan for the new Town Green... that little bit of blue you see is the headwaters of Piney Branch Creek which runs along Mill Street and continues west to Difficult Run, then north to the Potomac River (a jewel in our midst!), and finally downstream to the Chesapeake Bay. The new Town Green is the gateway to the Town's industrial district that extends down Mill Street to the Town's own Property Yard complex, surrounding the Piney Branch Creek with noxious, dumpster-strewn truck lots and property yards that spill their trash and run-off pollutants directly into Piney Branch Creek. While the Town is going around painting "Save the Bay" on every storm drain in Town, by far and away, the single largest source of pollution in the Town of Vienna entering the Chesapeake Bay watershed at the closest possible juncture in town is the Town's own Mill Street industrial district and Town property yard, right there at the Town Green! Newsletter articles and painting curbs might feel good, Vienna, but it's not leadership. If you want to save the Bay, save Piney Branch Creek starting at the Town Green... stop the polluters on Mill Street! And sadly so, Piney Branch Creek does look blue when drywall products, oils, and lawn chemicals are allowed to flow into it.

We would like to be involved with any HELP that we can give to PBCreek - Personally, JP and I have been very active with trying to help the Eastern Box Turtle - We are CERTAIN their habitat is in the area you descibe - We have a specific fund set up for those particular turtles -

With every foudation we put in, we contribute funds to
"Northern Virgina Reptile Rescue" (NVRR)- If it is a WOODED lot, we bring special dogs on-site, that can sniff-out and remove turtles before we clear land. We work to remove them to a "safe space".

What else can we do in conjunction with TOV to help with your issue? Deboarh

>>we bring special dogs on-site, that can sniff-out and remove turtles before we clear land. We work to remove them to a "safe space".

So that's why there are so many box turtles bumping around Northside Park! :-)

As I see it, the businesses along Mill Street need to keep their trash and run-off pollutants out of PBCreek. The trash is easy... clean it up. The careless pollutants are easy... don't let it happen. The run-off pollutants are difficult... there needs to be a sedimentation pond... but Mill Street was not built for that... PBCreek is the sedimentation pond. :-(

I am HAPPY to hear that there are so many box turtles bumping around Northside Park! :-)

I have not seen so many this summer.

How about cleaning up the trash? That is somthing that we can do...We can organize a group to at least help with that part - Let me know (via phone) if it would be helpful to organize a "Clean-Up Day".

Why can't you just go any old day and clean up Northside Park? I make it my mission to pick up every piece of trash when I visit Glyndon Park weekly. No organized group & no public recognition.

As Red Buttons said: "and I never got a dinner."

Hi VM - It isn't at all about public recognition - I just feel that sometimes people feel better doing something in "Groups" than as "Individuals". Some people find it more fun like that!

Not everybody feels that way - and maybe not you. That's ok.

I do pick up various pieces of trash and litter as I go for my walks alone.

I am simply proposing that if a group of people WANT to get together, and do something on a Saturday morning, followed by breakfast together at the VI, then some people might find that appealing...And if they DO, then I will help to organize that...

I really am just trying to help - It's not about me at all - It's about getting people together, if they want, to make a unified effort to clean up the Park...Deborah

>>Why can't you just go any old day and clean up Northside Park?

Agreed. It's a lifestyle choice... not a one-off event. I don't litter and I pickup litter... generally in wild areas... where it is needed, where it makes a difference, and where others don't know to go. I don't do thoroughfare trails nor yard trails leading to private property... it's amazing how many people don't bother to maintain their own space, like the PBCreek polluters on Mill Street.
