Statistics Abuse from the Maud Machine

How Can We Spin the News Today?
A comment was posted tonight by someone called 'Math person':
Another comparison to Fairfax County to go along with Matthew Stich's: If you take the police department budget in the latest Town newsletter ($5.1M) and divide it by the approximately 15000 residents of Vienna, you get $340 in police spending per resident. Then take the combined police and sheriff spending in the FY07 budget for Fairfax County ($201M), divide it by the estimated 2006 county population (1.059M), and you get $190 per person. Given those numbers, it's pretty hard to argue that the Town government is underfunding the police.
'Math person' are you trying to say that the Vienna Police force is not competent? Those hard working men and women are quality people! Additionally, your misuse of statistics is transparent. Obviously, Maple/123 is a HUGE artery of traffic handling far more than Vienna residents. You did not add those tens of thousands of people into your calculations...which is not surprising. Our police are under funded and understaffed for the total volume of people they must handle - which far exceeds the base population of Vienna.

Comments
In fact, I think the police are doing a great job. If you look at Vienna's crime statistics, they hardly portray a town under siege. The newspapers say that our police are working with the FBI to put an end to the bank robbery spree, and I'm confident they will succeed.
I'm glad to read that you too believe our police are dedicated and competent. Your website, however, fails to convey this belief. For example, read your article on the 7-11 robbery and the associated comments accusing the police of knowingly withholding information about the crime. Likewise, read the comments you printed about the Times article on the bank robberies, particularly Susan Stich's assertion that the Town police were withholding bank crime data from the county police. Going back farther, you've also published accusations that the Town police are silencing people who try to complain about gang activity.
Given your newly proclaimed admiration for our men and women in blue, I expect that you will publish a public apology to them, and promise never again to publish slander about them on your website. Alternatively, you could just admit that this is all a bunch of hypocritical nonsense aimed at demonizing your political enemies. Either approach would suffice.

'Not a machinist' denies membership in the Maud machine, kinda like Nixon's denial of being a crook. Go talk with the police. We have. They know the Maud administration is run like romper room behind the scenes.

Rest assured that I can read. I am also literate enough to know that one's curiosity is "piqued", not "peaked". You really should learn to spell before questioning other people's literacy.
Back on topic, surely you understand that crime cannot be covered up unless the police participate in the coverup. Therefore your claims that you only blame certain politicians (not the police) for the coverup aren't believable. Considering that the recent article in the Connection on the bank robberies featured an interview with a Town police officer, who said the Town is working with the FBI on the bank robberies, it's hard to spot anything that looks like a coverup here.

Ah, your source for your knowledge is a throw away paper in your drive way...the news there is always accurate.
The politicians in Vienna who run things, i.e. Maud, they are as honest as they come...not. Look how they have dealt with the historic district nonsense. Why don't you go back to the logic of telling us how we all pay so much more for our Police department than the County?

Holy cow - is this Maud?! I can almost hear these words coming from her mouth. This is fun!

Jerry Schanke of the Vienna Times is a reporter with a clear biased agenda. The evidence is out there. If he avoids the truth on some subjects, you can draw your own conclusions why. Does this kind of shoddy reporting make him corrupt? That case can be made.
