Police Back to the Basement; More Town Council Incompetence Comments (9)

15 years ago the Vienna Police moved out of the Town Hall basement to a new facility. Due to the mind blowing incompetence of leaders like Maud Robinson, the Police are now moving back into the basement at Town Hall. That is pathetic long term planning on behalf of the Vienna Town Council. One reader writes to criticize this web site:

"...I'm sure you saw the article in the Connection about the police department's new space in the basement of town hall. Despite your intense criticism of the project, the cops seem quite happy with it. Of course, they could be lying Maudites, but I trust our cops to be honest...I'm relying on the quotes from police officers interviewed in the article. Are you saying they are lying?"

Brilliant! Ladies and gentleman, the Chewbacca defense (straw man fallacy) is back! We are against inept Town Council decisions, not the Police, but nice try! You can watch the original South Park video of the defense here.

Deborah Brehony Weighs In on the Vienna Inn Comments (24)

Deborah Brehony, responding to this post about Maud's Vienna Inn destruction plan, states:

I don't think that ANYONE, including Mrs. Robinson, or any other Council Member or Vienna Citizen "wants to see the Vienna Inn torn down". Certainly, I do not "want" the Inn to come down...I ate there last night (highly recommend the filet mignon - It's as good as any at Mortons or Flemings and half the price..), AND, I ate there again this morning. We ALL love, it - WE DO, but the FACT remains that that building was built as a residential home that opened an ice cream parlor there in 1925. By 1958, it was called "Freddy's Cafe", and looked pretty much the same as it does today. Frank is on target - Can we accept that our beloved Inn might be in a a new venue in a perhaps mixed-use building, and still continue to serve us the beer and chili dogs that we love? That whole strip is so ripe for re-development. The buildings adjacent to the Inn are truly "caving in", and that entire area is better served by new, modern (and yes, you said it Frank) accessible commercial space. Parking accommodations, and possibly that needed garage should certainly be a part of the redevelopment. I do agree, that whatever considerations are being given to this particular area CAN and SHOULD be extended along all of Maple Avenue, from East Street up to Nutley. It only makes sense that what is fair for the goose is fair for the gander, and I agree that piece-meal is no meal at all. But let's not be short-sighted and cling to a residential structure that was built 82 years ago. Our chili dogs can (and WILL) be every bit as yummy in a new and more modern home!

There is inconsistency in Brehony's logic:

1. If the Vienna Inn is not worth saving as is, then all words "historic" should immediately be removed from this Town's vocabulary. Maud already led the destruction of Moorefield and the Vienna Inn (as is) is clearly the most historic structure, place, location - whatever you want to call it - in Vienna. If it goes, then the word "historic" should go too. Else we are all in la la pretend world. To not even hear the word HISTORIC mentioned along with the Vienna Inn shows the blatant hypocrisy of Maud Robinson, but we are sure the new fountain on the Town Green will be declared "historic" as soon as it is finished. Robinson is a historic con of the highest order.

2. Planning for Maple Avenue is a complete concept. It can't be done piecemeal. Council Member Edythe Kelleher has said this. We agree. To start "fixing" Maple Avenue by tearing down the Inn alone is pure politics and pure stupidity. We hope Deborah clarifies her position as it is not clear. Does she want redevelopment on Maple to start out of the gate for the whole stretch or does she want it to start with a singular focus on ripping the Vienna Inn down? Right now she is hedged. Take the hedge off please.

3. Brehony is wrong on Maud's intent toward the Inn. Maud Robinson's actions, not her spin or words, show clearly that she wants the Inn torn down. Bottom line, Jane and Maud are pretending to be in favor of redevelopment on Maple Avenue, but the reality is they have one tear down in their sights. That's deceptive leadership. That's the larger issue in play here. Governments should not be using the power of law changes to singularly benefit one person or group. Don't you think other property owners will want the same incentives granted to the Vienna Inn property owner?

NOTE: Deborah Brehony has clarified her stance. Read the comments for this post.

Wikipedia Propaganda: Who Was the Maud Crony? Comments (0)

Vienna Water Rip Off Comments (3)

Regular contributor 'Town Green' writes:

Is the Town of Vienna ripping off its residents by over charging for water? I think so! Read this article about how the City of Falls Church is suing Fairfax County over the loss of its profitable water revenue. Both Vienna and Falls Church get their water from the same old terrorist target reservoir in DC, except Vienna also blends in free well water. Both governments charge way more per 1000 gallons of water than what we would have to pay to get our water directly from Fairfax County. Both Vienna and Falls Church have manipulated their water and sewer charges to generate a profitable stream of revenue... profitable enough for Falls Church to sue the rightful competition in desperation. Meanwhile, Maud and her crooked cronies are ripping us off to pay for their garden club history projects, the Town Green, endless studies that get trashed, and assorted other elective expenses around Town like geriatric gambling junkets and basket weaving classes... Maud's private little LA-LA land! How come Council candidates campaign on a platform for getting cheaper water from Fairfax County, but then do nothing about it after being elected? Liars... it's time to vote the bums out! Vienna, DEMAND honest government! VOTE!

Vienna Recycling Bins? Comments (12)

Feedback in today from contributor "Town Green":

Laurie Cole wants Town of Vienna residents to switch to using blue recycling bins. She has personally tested them and said they are "convenient and easy to handle" (what's good for Laurie is good for... Laurie!). The current curbside recycling method being used around Vienna is to place paper/cardboard in paper/cardboard and mixed materials in plastic. Town workers then pick these up separately. Most residents simply re-use the paper and plastic that originally carried these recyclable materials into their homes to carry them back out to the curb.

Tysons Land Use Task Force. What About Vienna? Comments (1)

The Tysons Land Use Task Force is a good example of proper "planning." At least, regardless of how they go, there will be intelligent debate and discussion. Vienna's planning? Maud just says the center of Town is the Town Green and that's it. No study of anything. Just an 85-year old woman making multi-million dollar monuments to herself and then calling it "planning". Watch Maud with amusement. For once she is no longer on Council, Vienna will never operate this way again. She is the end of an era.

Maud Robinson's Vienna Inn Destruction Plan Is In Place Comments (44)

Multiple private phone conversations confirm: Maud has set her sights on the demolition of the Vienna Inn. While she pretends to be Mrs. Historic Vienna, she is conniving to have Vienna's one and only historic and cultural landmark wiped off the map ("It interferes with the Town Green"). You heard it here first. And yes, Jane Seeman is along for this idiotic attack on Vienna's most famous icon.

Town Code Sections to Deal with Corruption and Conflicts of Interest Comments (1)

There are two Town Code sections that may be useful to deal with corruption and conflicts of interest:

Sec. 2-12 Authority to Fine and Expel Members: The Town Council may fine its members for improper conduct and, with the concurrence of six members, expel a member. (Code 1962, § 2-3) (Amend. 2-70).

And:

Sec. 2-53 (c) Any member of the public directly affected or aggrieved by circumstances, conditions or occurrences arising within the Town, and over which the Town can reasonably be expected to exercise control or influence, shall have the right to have placed on the prepared agenda of any regular or special meeting and have considered a separately numbered item appropriate to the problem or request to which it is desired to direct the attention of the Council. Requests from members of the public for inclusion of such items on the agenda shall be in writing and contain a brief description of the circumstances giving rise to same. If it is desired that the Council adopt a particular ordinance, resolution or motion, the same should be prepared and submitted with the written statement. Such written request shall be delivered to the Town Clerk or Town Manager at least twenty working hours, three working days, prior to the start of the meeting at which consideration is desired, Thursday noon for meeting following Monday; provided, that in cases involving an emergency, as found by the Town Manager, the twenty-hour requirement may be waived. Members of the public at whose request items are included on the agenda are advised to be present at the Council meeting during which their item is discussed in order to offer additional explanation and so that members may have the opportunity to question them. All material pertinent to items scheduled hereunder shall be distributed to members with the prepared agenda.

The question becomes: what is best way to proceed? It may be best to use Sec. 2-53 (c) to get placed on the agenda a request for new conflicts of interest legislation.

Vienna Town Council's Inept Leadership on Parking Problems Comments (3)

This image shows the Vienna Presbyterian Church (VPC) parking lot on Maple Avenue. There can be no greater example of the failed leadership of Jane Seeman and Maud Robinson. These same Council members whine nonstop that a lack of parking is Vienna's biggest problem, but why did they allow this? For the lost in space critics who will write in and say, "but that is the Vienna Presbyterian Church's private property, Vienna could do nothing!"

That's BS. There are any number of private/public partnerships that could have been conceived to allow a parking garage at that location. All of Tysons Corner is going to be redeveloped through give and take incentives/negotiations and Jane and Mother Maud can't get one parking garage done? You say the Church is not interested in a win/win solution for all of Vienna? That's hard to believe. The Town should reach out now and do something productive for a change. Will it happen? Doubtful. Mother Maud is focused only on tearing down the Vienna Inn and the antique stores next to it.

One Day a Reporter Beyond Brian Trompeter Will Ask Some Questions Comments (0)

A comment posted today:

Laurie Cole's political ambition begins and ends in Vienna. This track record she has assembled only works as a cog in the Maud machine. Imagine her trying to run for County or State office and explaining her assorted conflicts to a reporter not working for a "free" newspaper. She would be mince meat.

Agreed.

The Laurie Cole Way: Not Good for Vienna Comments (13)

This post on Cole's money grab brought in this feedback:

When is the last time you heard an elected official railing against the evildoers? Bukont and Cole can't answer simple rightful questions from residents about the Town's historic district regulations... what stone or colors are acceptable... but they can call you fu*king morans and evildoers. Isn't that special! Just who are you defending, Laurie Cole... the citizens of Vienna or your builder neighbor who remodeled your kitchen, built your new house, and floated your real estate sales for over a year? If a resident is an evildoer for wanting to know what color he or she is allowed to paint their house, what is someone who uses their position in Town government for personal gain by allowing zoning violations, waiving zoning regulations, defeating the intent of zoning laws, and even trying to rewrite the zoning code to benefit one developer Steve Bukont? The Town is spending years in preparation for zoning code changes to fuel redevelopment of Vienna's commercial areas, but somehow you need to hurry up and change just a few words in one section of the code so that Bukont can pile up soil berms and condos on the old 7-11 commercial site while you pile up the cash. Isn't that special!

  • DEC 05: Bukont implodes as Chairman of Historic Review Board when questioned about his conflicts of interests and moneymaking role in Vienna government.
  • JAN 06: Bukont resigns from Historic Review Board.
  • JAN 06: Cole defends Bukont after his resignation saying, "It is with great sadness that I see Mr. Bukont's resignation before us. Mr. Bukont and his wife are active, engaged members of our community. They have given generously of their time and talents to enhance the quality of life in our Town. The barrage of insinuation and innuendo recently directed toward Mr. Bukont is reprehensible. I am very sorry that he and his family have been subjected to it. There is always room for civil discourse concerning differing views in public affairs. But insidious, unfounded attacks on a person's integrity are beyond the pale of civil debate. Such conduct places a chill over the public forum. Citizens are understandably reluctant to undertake public service when their professional and personal lives may become the targets of such despicable attacks. Vienna is fortunate to count among its residents many, many talented individuals willing to contribute their time and abilities to the greater good of all of us. It would be a tremendous loss to our community if the threat of unwarranted vilification were to discourage such contribution. So I am speaking tonight in support and gratitude for those of our citizens, like Mr. Bukont, who give their time and skills in serving on Town Boards and Commissions. I believe it is important to speak out on this matter, mindful of these words of Edmund Burke, 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.' I hope the other members of Council join me in my support of our citizen Boards and Commissions."
  • JAN 06: Bukont's 111-113 Church Street assessed at $4 million.
  • MAY 06: Cole supporters defend her.
  • 2006: Bukont's 225 Locust Street controversy.

Cole seems to have forgotten that Edmund Burke also said, "Among a people generally corrupt liberty cannot long exist."

"I Am Not Living in the Past" Comments (4)

In the following clip when Maud talks about how she proposed parking solutions 50 years ago, it is worth noting that she was proposing the solutions to herself. Of course, she and her husband the then Mayor controlled Vienna and still do. We have no parking solutions in Vienna due to a failure on the part of Maud and Charlie Robinson. Those two alone dropped the ball.

Weened on the Politcal Bosom of Mao Zedong: Chairman Carey Sienicki Makes Maud Proud Comments (4)

Last week we posted about the most recent Windover Heights Historic Review Board meeting. For background there are no rules regarding color in the historic district. While that is true, the Board still asks for "color". In an effort to get to the bottom of how the Board decides what color works and what doesn't a simple question is posed: what is the color palette to chose from?

Shrley Damon, who sits on the Board, immediately says there is no such thing as a color palette. Opps! The Chairman of the Historic Board Carey Sienicki then takes over in this telling 2 minute clip to try and correct Damon:

Sienicki thinks she has guidelines? She thought something different in 2004. We will address that lie in another post...

Immediately following that interchange with Sienicki, the situation escalates. Carey Sienicki starts to meltdown around 1:20 into the following clip:

What are the acceptable colors for the Windover Heights Historic District? There is no such list. The bigger issue here? Why does this woman twist herself into a knot over this issue? Clearly, she believes that if she says there is no color palette - the Town loses their court case. Some people will do ANYTHING to make Maud happy, even if that means losing all dignity in the process. Carey watch yourself on YouTube.com. Ask friends to watch you speak in public. Get some objective advice. Stop drinking the Kool-aid - it will make your lips "red".

Jane and Maud Discuss Economic Development in the Stone Age Comments (6)

This is a 25 minute video clip (25MB) from Monday's Town Council work session. Note how Council members Kelleher and Polychrones address legitimate issues only to be shouted down by Mother Maud. Seeman seems lost throughout. Lovelace's statements are an embarrassment (he is either spinning or ignorant). Cole has no other objective except to try and assume Maud's role when she is gone (and make lots of $).

This file was too big to go on YouTube.com. The video is only grainy due to compression. If the Council was not so intent on "hiding", and put meetings on cable, this would not be an issue.

Maud Pushed for Parking Solutions in the 1960s. Say What? Comments (1)

At Monday's Town Council work session Maudasaurus stated that she was pushing for Vienna parking garages in the 1960s. Apparently, the Council did not listen to her glorious wisdom. Maud's Economic Development Plan for Vienna? Tear Down the Vienna Inn Comments (6)

Last night Maud, who generally does more talking than anyone else at a Council meeting, provided further insights into the cobwebs of her mind:

1. Robinson was clear AGAIN that the two new banks, Chevy Chase and Commerce Bank, are good for Vienna. She sees those as proving Vienna's vitality. She sees those as proper economic development. That alone could classify her as past the due date, but there was more to come.

2. Robinson wants to study economic development on Maple Avenue from Park Street to Dominion Road. She wants to give that area of Vienna special building incentives to redevelop and build taller buildings. Sounds positive, right? Not so fast. What properties are in this arbitrary boundary as determined by Dear Maud Leader? The Presbyterian Church. No development taking place there. Then the Town Green. Ditto. That covers the boundary for that side of the street. Cross over. Now, we have the Library. No tear down there. Then the Business Bank building of condos. No change coming there. And then finally Whole Foods. That's not coming down. So why propose a plan that has no hope of doing anything? That should be obvious.

However, this plan does leave one property targeted by Mother Maud...

She wants the Vienna Inn gone. We have said this before, but last night proved it.

That is her plan and since the owner of the Vienna Inn doesn't own the property (he owns the business only), Maud knows she can influence the property owner who no longer lives in Vienna.

Shsssh...Don't Talk About Mother Maud's Millions! Comments (14)

At tonight's Town Council work session Mother Maud railed on about the lack of "affordable" housing in Tysons Corner. She then reminded everyone that it is not her job to make developers wealthy in Vienna. Isn't that special? The woman who has more money than most all Vienna residents is helping "poor" people in Tysons and making sure Vienna developers don't get as rich as her! Vienna should have a work session just to count Maud's money! It makes you wonder why Maud doesn't reach into her greedy pockets and help those less fortunate. This whole charade where Queen Maud pretends to be "of the people" is getting tiring.

How Much Money Does Maud Robinson Have? A Pile of Cash! Comments (6)

As we move into election season it is worth reminding Vienna citizens about Maud Robinson's wealth. Sure, you have seen her "dressed down" at Magruder's and you have seen her rail against "rich developers", but it turns out Maud is loaded. Maud Robinson is a multi-millionaire AT A BARE MINIMUM. She appears to have far and away more wealth by a country mile over any other Town Council member or Board member:

Review Maud Robinson's Stock & Bond Holdings (PDF).

1. Maud has 43 investments valued at between $10,000 and $50,000 each.
2. Maud has 22 investments valued at over $50,000 each.

At a bare minimum, excluding her RS-10 zoned 30,000+ sq. ft. property (worth over $1M), Robinson has, if assuming the LOWEST range of security values (which is highly unlikely), $1.5M in stocks and bonds alone.

And she doesn't want anyone to know. With such extensive holdings in public companies that operate in Vienna, a thorough read of Robinson's wealth is in order. Additionally, a full accounting of services provided to her by Vienna developers should be started.

Why Did the Mayor of Vienna Lie? Here Is One Citizen's Excuse Comments (4)

This post brought in this feedback:

Isn't it possible the mayor receives a number of letters every day, and when she received your request for a copy of this particular letter she made an assumption that it was only directed to her? Maybe this is a stretch but I'm willing to give our mayor the benefit of the doubt on this. As you say, why lie about something so trivial? She may be guilty of making a poor assumption. I’d like to think she isn’t going out of her way to lie about something which you were able to acquire on your own.

The only trivial part of Seeman's video response is the part she decided to lie about, but the letter is by no means trivial.

In fact, this very non-personal letter, sent on legal letterhead, was from one of the most influential Vienna citizens of the last 30 years. He has been a close friend of Maud's for decades. The motivation for hiding the letter? The letter struck right at the recently passed Maple Avenue redevelopment plan passed by Council. The author of the letter was specifically left out of Town redevelopment plans after being led to believe he would be included for 3 years.

For the criticism to come from this man was no small matter for Seeman. Read between the lines and it is clear litigation is on the way.

Additionally, Seeman's letter had all the CC's in plain view. To make the assumption it was only for her doesn't pass the smell test. You think the Council did not discuss the letter the moment they all received it? Give us a break. Once citizens found out that the CC's were on the letter the Town rolled over and provided a copy. Obviously, it was an organized game by Seeman.

Now that you know more, it will be interesting to see if you continue to make inane excuses for a Mayor caught in the act of lying through her teeth.

Deborah Brehony Defender Intervenes Comments (5)

Today at this post, in the comments section, someone wrote this:

"Stop the Deborah Brehony attacks on this site. It get us no where. It reminds me of Maud tactics."

Another reader responded:

"This is an ineffectual and pathetic request on a medium such as this public blog. You can't stop or manicure the 'discussion' if you expect others to visit and participate. I recommend you refute anything you disagree with or believe to be unwarranted and let the chips fall where they may."

It is worth noting that this site recently posted this comment on Brehony. Bottom line, Brehony is at the end of the day a politician seeking public approval. She deserves a thorough 'once over' just like any other would be political leader in this community. She knows she is welcomed to post here at any time unfiltered and unedited as she has in the past.

Carey Sienicki: "Don't Worry Maud, I Will Clean Your Toilets Too" Comments (5)

The current Chairman of the Windover Heights Board of Review is Carey Sienicki. She was there sitting in the #2 post when then Chairman Steve Bukont lost his marbles in Dec 05. She learned well from her master. Last night Sienicki delivered one of those nasty magical moments that Vienna politicians are famous for. What happened? Sienicki was asked time and time again: what colors are acceptable in the historic district? She refused to answer. Sienicki was pressed hard, which led to her finest hour as a public servant. "Historic Church Street" Sign Scam Comments (10)

In the last few years in her zeal to invent historicity in Vienna, Mother Maud placed signs around Vienna pointing in the general direction of "Historic Church Street."

Questions:

1. What EXACTLY is historic on Church Street?
2. Where is the documentation, Federal or State, of historic anything on Church Street?
3. Are Bukont's two new buildings historic?
4. Is the new Paul Layer building on the corner of Center St. and Church St. historic?
5. Are the new brick sidewalks added a few years back historic?
6. Are the green pylons located at driveways on Church St. historic?
7. Is Bazin's historic?
8. Was the original firehouse torn down to make room for Bazin's historic?
9. Why is the Freeman Store NOT on any historic registers?
10. Is the Caboose on Church St. historic?
11. Are the houses on Church St. from Park St. to Beulah Rd. historic?

Please don't tell us that these historic Church Street signs have no foundation? They were not put up in the last few years to simply falsify Vienna history because the Town is facing lawsuits about their historical politics? There is no way that Maud and the historic wackos could be that transparent?

Is this building historic?

The Maud Spin at Wikipedia.com Comments (11)

From Vienna's entry on Wikipedia.com:

"The town's recent utility undergrounding project along the main road, Maple Avenue, is considered a success as evidenced by the beautiful, utility-free skies above Maple Avenue. The project's high costs and disruption to traffic were easily outweighed by the completion of the project and the result: removal of all of the unsightly electrical utility poles and their wiring along Maple Avenue."

Gee, we did not know Maud was doing her own PR! Clearly, this writing is against the basic tenets of Wikipedia:

Still in a Stupor Over the Coming 1st Amendment Ban Comments (4)

We here at historicvienna.com are still in amazement that a current Vienna board member thinks that it is only a matter of time until new laws and regulation outlaw the content on this website. It is such a bizarre belief that it makes you wonder about the basic mental stability of some in power in this Town.

"My Life Is Sitting on Vienna Town Council" Comments (1)

What happens when elected positions in a government are occupied by people whose whole life revolves around just being on Town Council? Not much. That's where Vienna is ladies and gentleman. Fairfax County is exploding, we are in the middle of it, and we have no leadership - at all.

We desperately need people who want to achieve something other than power for the sake of power. Now, you might laugh at that statement thinking, "What could be so great about being on Town Council?"

Being on Town Council is the only thing people like Maud Robinson and Jane Seeman live for. The fact that their husbands passed on the baton to both of them further exemplifies what Deborah Brehony said in the paper, "dynasty". It doesn't take much observation to see that they have the same death grip on power that people like Byrd and Thurmond (now dead of course) have/had in the US Senate.

These politicians long out live their usefulness (whether they ever had it is debatable), but they hang on because they can and because they have nothing else. It's not just public service to them, it's their lives. It's all very sad because clearly Vienna has some of the most educated and ambitious populace in the country. However, as of right now we are relegated to leaders who are terribly incompetent.

At this stage of the game beating around the bush and saying that Robinson and crew have redeemable political value is hogwash. Anyone who says that probably could have been convinced to drink Kool-aid with Jim Jones.

Perhaps, some people don't like the tone of this website. Fine, but if you live in Vienna and you are honest with yourself, you must be embarrassed at what populates these pages. The actions and words of our current crop of leaders are atrocious.

All this said, this website is under no illusions. Until the older generations (the 80+ and over set) that keep voting the Maud's of the world into power either wakeup and acknowledge that their long time political Madame has lost it or they too pass onto the other side, Vienna will remain crippled. And crippled ain't good when you are in the middle of Fairfax County.
