Wake Up!
A post from reader "Town Green" today:
The Town News Letter with candidate statements has arrived. It's time for new people, Vienna. Lovelace has nothing to add (say) and Robinson runs on history... "Vote for me, Maud, because I control it all and it will all fall down if you don't". This voter resents being asked to grant Lovelace another "special privilege just because", and I resent Maud's scare tactics and false starts on issues that have languished far too long. It is time for Lovelace and Robinson to retire. Why wait for them to expire in office... Town government is not a retirement plan at tax payer expense. Vote, Vienna! Send Maud and George home for a couple years and bring in some new energy... all of Town staff will be renewed with a fresh start.Noticeably missing from the candidate statements is any mention of our new glorious Town Green. Now isn't that interesting! An $8m and counting centerpiece capital improvement? project and nobody responsible for it wants to take credit or talk about it! I'd say they are running scared. It's vote for me May 1 and back to my garden club government May 12 at my Town Green dedication. Wake up, Vienna, and go vote!

I resent that they're are wasting $8+ million of our tax dollars on a Town Park.
To add insult to injury, the park is going to make traffic even worse on Maple Avenue/123.
These idiots have to go. VOTE THEM OUT.

I'm not sure how much increase in traffic we might get on 123, but I'd agree Church Street will be difficult at best during any sort of events there.
On a side note I've seen several people complain of the cost for the Town Green as being in the $8 million range. The town website lists the total cost of this project as $3.75 million including cost of land ($2 mil), construction ($1.5 mil) and design ($250,000). Why does everyone here seem to think the cost is $8 million? Perhaps I missed something.

Reality... there are tens of thousands of non-TOV residents that are forced to drive up and down Maple Ave every day because of bad decisions made in the past using the same thought process of the incumbents. The cars are going to keep coming in droves with development.
Today it takes 20 minutes to drive through TOV along Maple during rush hour. Do small towns have "rush hour"? How long is this trip going to take when Tysons & Vienna Metro projects are complete?

It is amazing that Maud and George did not mention the Town Green. Guess they all know that the Town Green will have issues; like where will all the cars park because not everyone can walk to this place. Not many citizens wanted this park, yet the TC voted for it. In fact, they pushed for it.

1. Time value of money.
2. Lost tax revenue.
3. Opportunity cost.
4. Price appreciation on land.
5. Ongoing maintenance costs - forever.
8M might very well be low.

Does anyone remember after 911 that there was discussion by TC to raise the meals tax to support this Town Green? Remember that this was at a time when no one knew what was going to happen to the economy. Enough people came out to voice their opinion against this that the Council did not vote on it. They instead voted on it later, where it passed unanimously. Surprised that TC would put their own selfish interests before that of the citizens or business owners?

At the very least, voters should prevent Maude from using the green as a personal memorial. Fight to have it named for the biker who was killed near the site. His family deserves that much.

The Town Green has nothing to do with sentiments. It has only NOW to do with Jamestown. After that it will be Robinson park. But right now for a brief time only if you can find a link to the family and Jamestown Maud may consider it. I say all this sarcastically because remember Maud would not even allow the bike rack the family was so willing to generously donate. And this I believe will truly be her legacy!

A bike rack would just get in the way with the concrete walking paths, outhouse, theater, fountain, stone walls, and brick patios.
Seriously, we are supposed to call this a "green," right?
If they had just put a huge acre of asphalt, I wouldn't have been surprised.

You are all a bunch of crybabies. I will win again, and I WILL enjoy my Town Green, and I will laugh all the way to the bank. So take that you silly Vienna morons, see if I care, all my people, friends, and cronies, all stand behind me, and I will march into victory, and do whatever I want to do in this town, because I made this town, what it is, and you can stop me. EVER!
