A Letter to the Editor

A letter to the editor recently published:

Editor:

Your April 4 edition included an article about the incumbents running for Vienna Town Council. Maude Robinson got the majority of the quotes. Let's look at some of what she said:

1) "the most pressing need for Vienna includes the need for increased sidewalk construction in town...." How many years has it been since the town commissioned a survey of residents to learn where voters would like to see new sidewalks? And how many new sidewalks have actually been constructed? Perhaps the candidate would like to point to her successes in this area? I don't believe a single new sidewalk has been built under her reign.

2) Mrs. Robinson is a champion for limiting redevelopment in downtown Vienna. Here the candidate has been so successful in making Vienna an undesirable place for developers that the past two decades of national growth and prosperity have yielded so little new development in downtown Vienna that the strip has become run-down, its stores outdated. It fails to provide for the needs of local residents, so most residents must shop elsewhere to meet most of their needs--a recipe for a dying commercial district.

3) Robinson's goal is to maintain the low building profile of the town, except for possibly the addition of a parking garage. So what she is saying is that the town's landmark, its signature building, the structure that would be visible above all else, would be a parking garage. Is this good urban design? Is it appropriate for maintaining "small town character" or any kind of community character? These questions don't even begin to address the wisdom of constructing a (presumably public) parking garage on a sprawling, nearly two-mile long commercial strip.

Maude Robinson has been a fixture in the town for as long as many of the outdated commercial properties. It's time for her to go.

Anne Smith
Vienna

In her point #3, Anne is referring to the Vienna Inn which Maud is seeking to demolish and replace with a parking garage.

Comments

Good points, Anne. Just the tip of the iceberg, of course.

As I've mentioned, everyone on this website should write letters to the editor. The Gazette and Connection WILL publish them & it's one more way to get the message out to voters.

Her behavior at the NARFE "debate" is very telling about how she feels and treats anyone but herself. She is a pompous, self centered, egotistical, manic old lady, whose sole interest in Vienna Politics is to try and "prove" to Vienna that she is the only one who really knows what we want.

Recently, however, people, both young and old, and from both sides of the aisle have begun to see the "real Maud Robinson" for the rude, outdated, self-centered zealot for what she really is. I have seen her out and out verbally trash people she's appointed (read anointed). She does this when she doesn't think anyone else is around to witness her.

So, IMHO, Maud Robinson, should be encouraged to step down. Whether that be done at the polls or whatever, Vienna needs to get more sound and better thinking people to represent and lead.

VOTE, but don't Vote for Maud or Lovelace.

Those who've witnessed, or been a victim of her verbal abuse should be sure to tell their stories in the media. Her behavior must be made known.

I find your site to be pretty disgusting - the web equivalent of talk radio. Trashing Town Council members in order to get the zoning laws changed so you can put up condos in the historic district. It's disappointing that you are dragging political discourse in Vienna to such laws. Your site has solidified my support for Maud and George.

Nice theory/reporting Matt! One correction. No one wants to build condos in the historic district. BUT everyone who lives there IS combining all of their properties together to sell off to the Church of Scientology for their new NOVA campus. Is that acceptable?

Matt Z-

The only members of Town Council that I have seen "trashed" on this site are the ones that are liars, cheats, or [...]. Can you point out on this website where Town Council members are trashed falsely? Looking for specifics here...

Okay, here's an example of this site trashing someone falsely:

http://www.historicvienna.com/2006/10/laurie_dirocco_investigation.html

Choice quote from your posting: "We are also very concerned that an individual such as DiRocco actually has involvement with students. Once all GMU records are in, they will be posted."

Needless to say, your so-called investigation never produced any facts to substantiate your hateful slander that she is unfit to be involved with students. And you wonder why people are concerned over Susan Stich's membership in your little cabal?

Is your explanation going to be that Ms. DiRocco isn't a member of the town council, so my example doesn't count?

Do you know DiRocco? Have you ever seen her in action? Have you ever been a victim of her corruption? Have you ever seen her walk out in the middle of a Planning Commission meeting to avoid a vote?

In other words, your accusation that she's unfit to be involved with students was nonsense, and rather than admit that, you just fling around vague claims of victim hood and corruption. Where's the evidence from GMU that you promised to post?

Again, we see why it is SO important to have All TOV MEETINGS AND WORK SESSIONS BOTH RECORDED AND BROADCAST SO EVERYONE CAN SEE! If you have not been witness to their behavior, by not attending meetings, you don't what you are talking about. DiRocco's behavior is not tolerable. If you want to really know why she left the room and refused to vote, ask her.

That's why we need VIDEO. We are not going to get it with these folks, so Vienna, Maud must Go. Lovelace, being Maud's little puppet, must go too.

Based on the way DiRocco handles herself on the Planning Commission, so easily dismissing private property rights with her VOTES and WORDS, she is unfit to work in a public university with students - where honesty counts for something. Let her go take a job in the private sector.

In terms of student reviews of her, privacy laws refuse their release. There is no reason that a teacher at a public university, paid through tax-payer dollars, should be shielded from criticism, especially when she sits on a powerful political board in a local community making unjust decisions.

Do you know DiRocco? Have you ever seen her in action? Have you ever been a victim of her corruption? Have you ever seen her walk out in the middle of a Planning Commission meeting to avoid a vote?

DiRocco doesn't want anyone to know what she actually does in Vienna. She just wants to pretend she is some innocent university teacher. Yeah, right.

Tearing down the Vienna Inn for a parking garage is asinine. The Town of Vienna needs to save all commercial revenue producing property. VPC and the Town Green have removed about 1,5 acres of commercial revenue producing land form the tax rolls. This loss of revenue transfers the taxes to the residential community. Positioning a parking garage in the middle of a two-mile long strip is ludicrous. The Maple Avenue Vision committee concluded that several parking facilities strategically placed along the strip would be best utilized. If a central downtown garage is needed, the Town could joint venture with the VPC to provide a parking garage on the present VPC lot. There is no need to remove anymore of Vienna’s Tax base from the tax rolls. Maud’s plan to plop a garage down in the middle of town with no Master Plan is poor judgment.

Where exactly did Maud say, "I propose that we tear down the Vienna Inn and build a 6 story parking garage in its place."? Despite all the hysteria you're trying to drum up, I can't find where she or anyone else made such a proposal. Show me the proof and I'll join you in expressing outrage.

Some candidates decry the Town Green while some others minimize their roles in its planning. That is all well and good, but which candidates would work to sell the Town Green if elected? It will be a costly lesson, but sunk costs are sunk. Functional houses and buildings are torn down all the time.

Town Green?
I took a walk through the Town Green today. It looks to me like about 2/3 of the site will be pavement. Town Brown is more like it.

"Town Brown is more like it."

I had the same thought myself. What a fiasco this is turning out to be. My second thought was that a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over Maple Avenue would have been (and still would be) a much better use of resources.

Anyone looking for proof that Vienna Inn is a target for destruction needs to recall a newspaper article where Jane Seeman when confronted about the building that stood where TG is retorted: How do you know about that. It's secret. Need I say more. Safeway beware they're coveting your land.

I read that the owner of this blog site is a medical doctor. If that is the case, you should be ashamed of yourself. Is this what they taught you in medical school - to throw mud and trash people. As a physician I thought you might hold yourself to a higher ethical standard than a talk radio host. What ever happened to the dictum "To do no harm?" Again, it is disappointing and depressing that political discourse in Vienna is being taken to such lows.

I read that Maud Robinson is an honest person. If that is the case, she should be ashamed of herself. Is this what they taught her in 2 years of law school - to throw mud and trash people. As a an almost attorney I thought she might hold herself to a higher ethical standard than a talk radio host. What ever happened to the dictum "To do no harm?" Again, it is disappointing and depressing that political discourse in Vienna is being taken to such lows.

Mattzy:

I have no idea who you are or any of your background in Vienna or Vienna's politics. How long have you been a resident? Has your time here been good? Have you ever had to discuss with Maud a particular problem you were having? Did she willingly fix the problem? Did Maud publicly try to berate you? Did Jane act like she had no idea what you were talking about? Did George smile and say something nice but completely ignore the task at hand?

In Vienna, we have excellent trash pick up (seriously - I love my garbage men - they are the nicest) but after that, I can't really think of what Vienna does that I'm proud of - lack of sidewalks? Poor commercial planning? Town festivals that have turned into runaway horses and Scientology huts? Traffic?

>>What ever happened to the dictum "To do no harm?"

As I see it, this website was born out of extreme frustration over the harm imposed by the arbitrary, capricious, inequitable, and preferential enforcement of select personal opinion over the inherent rights of residents living in the Windover Heights Historic District. But that is now not the only garden club concern this website is free to discuss. If this blog is a new low, it is only because there has never been public political discourse in Vienna in which the public is protected from those wielding power and does not have to suffer patronizing and false discourse with OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. Anyone who has participated here regularly can view current affairs and sense a positive difference, despite any raw edges.

TG - It is very obvious what is going on right now. It is 10 days before the election and a "team" has been put together to "refute" any problems that we may be talking about. What I don't understand is how anyone under the age of 50 raising children in Vienna can support George or Maud.

"I read that the owner of this blog site is a medical doctor."

Hello to Matt and everyone else who Maud has lied to:

I know exactly who owns this site, and I can tell you categorically that this person is not a physician - he does something else for a living, which allows him to work on the site during the day.

If you really put some thought into this, you'd realize that a physician has patients, as well as on-call duties, and wouldn't be able to put the time and effort into this site day in and day out. Also, if the site was owned by a physician, would he have approved your post?

Think Matt, think. I know you are capable of it.

They are welcome! Have you noticed how quickly one's viewpoint can be swayed here by reading just one post. But then another post comes along to shed more light. For instance, the 'renters don't pay real estate taxes comment' may have got you going, 'yeah!'... but it's not quite so, is it. I do think readers are better listeners and more likely to get a point made here. So, make your point and we'll get it if it's worth getting.

Hey Matt Z! READ MY POST!

1.) DiRocco a total power hungry wacko.

2.) She is not on Town Council.

Is that all you got? Is this the best the Maudite Blog Patrol has to offer?

Who is trashing who here?
