Virginia Tech Thoughts
While as a free country we can't protect every corner, we the people of Vienna need to examine if some of our public facilities (schools, Town Hall, Community Center, Library, etc.) have precautions in place to deal with the unexpected. Do we have cameras in place? Do we have plans in place to communicate? There is nothing positive to take from the VA Tech tragedy except to try and prevent the next one...and to prevent a similar tragedy time is of the essence to put a plan into action.
One mourner at Virginia Tech pleaded "for parents near and far who wonder at a time like this, 'Is my child safe?'"

I've got a few serious concerns about safety in Vienna.
Soon after 9/11, Maud and Jane set about to focus on funding the Vienna Town Green, when they should have used that money to better secure Vienna.
Due to their poor planning, our police force is divided physically, and communication and coordination could become a huge issue in the event of something like what happened at VT.
Also, response time is critical in events such as these. With our terrible traffic - especially now that we've got the Town Green mucking things up on Maple Avenue - it will take an extended time for our 1st responders to actually respond - and be helpful.
While I can appreciate that it's neat to have a Town Green, I think it's more important to actually be safe and secure in the event of something terrible happening. I wish Maud and Jane felt the same way.

Maybe Mom of 2 your reason is why Vienna is having trouble recruiting?

The Town is so very safe thanks to the efforts of our police officers. With our closeness to D.C. and various other "questionable" areas, they do a great job being pro-active and keeping people safe. There is no way to have prevented this tragedy unless we hire a police officer to be on-site at every premises; not feasible. Our cops have such speedy response times compared to other jurisdictions because they come when called. No "phone call reporting"; they actually send a cop. We should actually be thinking how to stay a step ahead and expand our force because no area is immune from this type of tragedy.
