Why?
Real simple question as Vienna heads to the polls in about a week:
Why is it important for some to re-elect Maud?
The Maud benefits don't seem to be definable.
One response that came in:
The failure over the years of Vienna residents to take an active interest in the administration of their tax dollars by not knowing the issues and the candidates, and by not voting... has allowed Town leadership to become a stagnant and aging garden club of personal agenda that has ignored the common needs of our community and has failed to do the right thing when doing the right thing is very often hard and selfless.Lawless boards ruling from the hip, failure to maintain and communicate a full public record of Town business, sound bites over substance, endless planning that amounts to zero progress, major capital expenditures of dubious value to the community, failure to maintain a viable commercial district and tax base to afford residents local goods and services and in turn tax relief, failure to take responsibility for failures, blatant conflicts of interest that mirror favoritism toward the usual suspects, and on and on. Need another sidewalk survey, Vienna? How about a another beautification award for your collection! Some folk singing? A house and garden tour? Another quarter million dollars a year in arts and crafts? Another increase in your water bill and real estate tax? Another speed bump or Bukont encroachment on your right-of-way?
HOW ABOUT A REALITY CHECK! VOTE, VIENNA!!!

I have no idea (seriously) why we should re-elect Maud or any other incumbent. I keep watching the bank robberies, no sidewalks, HORRIBLE traffic, et al. And, especially what she did regarding the bike memorial on the Town Green.

Maud allowed the walks along the Maple Ave. commercial corridor to be rebuilt leaving very little space for people to walk.
Maud allowed the Southern States property to be rebuilt leaving very little space for people to park.
Maud allowed Steve Bukont to rebuild on Church Street with cheap vinyl-Victorian siding construction and elevated access requiring a mound of stairs and ramps leaving very little space for people to walk.
Maud allowed Steve Bukont to cram an over-height row of townhouses on Locust Street with an ugly, unsafe stepped ramp on which people will fall trying to walk.
Maud allowed the expansion of the strip mall on Park at Locust without fixing an already difficult and dangerous intersection.
Maud's solution for traffic is speed bumps that expect drivers to slow down to below the posted speed limit.
Maud allowed Jiffy Lube to over-build the corner at Maple and Courthouse eliminating the sidewalk where people would walk to access the bus stop.
Maud allows business along Mill Street and runoff from her historic society garden club Town Green to directly impact and pollute Piney Branch Creek, Difficult Run, and the Chesapeake Bay.
Maud raises our taxes to pay for over-priced water supplies and to increase the Town's arts and crafts budget by 10%.
Mauds allows the Arts and Crafts Director to manage Town capital improvement projects.
If you want more garden club shinanigans in the Town of Vienna, vote for an incumbent.

I can only think of three reasons that someone would vote for Maud:

>>Maud allowed...
What do these allowances have in common... besides Maud?
They represent inside decisions made for inside reasons to benefit inside interests at the expense of the greater common good of the general public. The failure over the years of Vienna residents to take an active interest in the administration of their tax dollars by not knowing the issues and the candidates, and by not voting... has allowed Town leadership to become a stagnant and aging garden club of personal agenda that has ignored the common needs of our community and has failed to do the right thing when doing the right thing is very often hard and selfless.

I just took a walk in my 'hood with the baby and stopped by the Sarah Mercer park for a breather. Nice enough but completely useless park. It needs a big shade tree, though. I'm not going to sit on that sun dial with its reflective metal tips and be roasted in the sun.
Which brings me to my point - the sidewalks in NW are horrible (where they exist). I almost got run over twice walking down Lewis Street & some older gentleman in a hurry had the nerve to honk at me for causing him to slow down on his journey racing through my part of town.
I see all the lovely & probably expensive sidewalks going down Center (with all those block retaining walls). Where are the sidewalks around here? What is the next group to be done? Nothing?!
Thanks, Maud (& George & Jane)!

You want flippin' sidewalks, come to the TOWN GREEN. There's plenty of sidewalk to go around there!

Because Maud is a true visionary. Who else would ever conceive of a plan to have a parking garage as the town focal point. This takes a true genius with fresh thinking.
By the way Maud, I have an application in with CarrPark. Do you think you can use their services at your garage? I would love to go to work everyday and think about how I was on the site of the former Vienna Inn.
