Maud Marvels at New Industries
From the Sun Gazette:
Vienna's skate park concept is in its earliest stages. What happens next will depend on the outcome of real estate discussions and the availability of construction moneys, she said. Vienna Mayor M. Jane Seeman said people have been asking for a skate park for years, and that young people are skateboarding in parking lots all over town. “We provide facilities for other kinds of sports,” she said. Vienna officials recently installed metal bands on some surfaces at the Vienna Town Green to discourage skateboarders there, Salgado said. Council member Maud Robinson marveled at skateboarding's increasing popularity and sophistication. “It's like the sandlot baseball game has morphed into the big time,” she said. “Kids are used to parking lots and curbs. Suddenly, to accommodate them, we need a whole new industry developed.”

"Thank you Maud, that was clear."

be careful what you wish for. the way this town council operates, they're likely to tear down a thriving shopping center and close off a street to create a skate park.

Hey Maud, how about the "availability of construction monies" to fix my crumbling street, so that MY 4-wheeled vehicle has a smooth surface to ride on? Last I checked, I pay more taxes in this town than the typical skateboarder does.

How about the parking lot empty for 30 years behind Magruders next to Maud's house?
Note: Pontific8tor buy a skateboard!

A skatepark behind Magruders would rock! Whoo-hoo!

Buy a skateboard?? At MY age?? My chiropractor would have an aneurysm if I did anything like that!!

Suddenly??? Maud is stuck in the mud! And the rest of us are stuck with her, sucking on penny candy, admiring her white wash. We need to shrink her down so she can live out her fantasy on the model train boards in the Vienna Station.

She is so out of touch...the ways she speaks...what she says...if she was 35 instead of 85 people would speculate openly about whether she was impaired.

Accommodating Skateboarders? Who are we accommodating with the Town Green. How about the Police bike programs. The bowman house crafts accommodate out of towners. The community center is utilized by out of towners. Recall the wooden exercise station built in back of the community center, is it still maintained? When was the last time anyone played Botcha Ball at the community center.

A skate park sounds perfect for children. I'm all for a park that might interest children if used. However, the town wants to do a traffic study and spends pennies on it; traffic affects everyone. Yet what kind of study will be done? A study on a few streets? Let the town do a study that might be able to help citizens, walkers, motorists...yet the town will do a small study and what good will come out of it? The people deserve a real study looking at the flow of traffic into town and out of town on ALL streets. A study is in progress yet Beulah and Branch Road are under construction. So, the people studying our roads do not really know how traffic flows with these streets and the detours. The study should have been completed by May 1st of this year before the construction of these roads. Some detour streets that never have traffic; have it now and the streets that normally are heavy with traffic and speeders may not have problems now due to the detour. Oh heavens! The people of Vienna deserve better. A study only being done for a few streets? An educational program should be given to TSC with the Town Council sitting on. Remember, TC has the last say so on what happens to our streets. How can a study be done, recommendations be given and then TC will decide not to do it? As much as I would like to see a SkatePark, I would rather see major money being spent on other traffic calming methods instead of stop signs and maybe a speed table. TC needs to learn what other methods can be used and TC needs for the Town to be pro-active NOW.

FCFY:
I agree. As much as I think a place for young people to gather and be active is vital to our community, spending more on our infrastructure is imperative. Fix our sewers, roads, sidewalks, etc. When that is all up to speed, let's talk a skate park.
Which also leads me to another thought. I really would like to see something OUTDOORS for our youth. The INDOOR Club Phoenix is just another example of keeping kids indoors & on their fat fannies. No Child Left Inside is a brilliant idea.

The people who post on this web site could be much more effective if they wrote directly to the Mayor and Town Council and did so with some civility.
Spending money on things that most citizens don't need is unacceptable. The Town leaders keep picking our pockets and raising taxes and we poor schmucks do little about it. For instance, the pathetic turnout in the last election.
If there are people who want a park, they can shell out the cash for it. If the Town asks the people that want the park to pay for it themselves, there won't be any park and that's fine with me.
They keep raising taxes for stuff we don't need. We can't afford everything people ask for. They need to make sure the Town functions efficiently and cost-effectively, and that’s all. We have no obligation to buy whatever people want for their own interests. We need to do only what's needed, and nothing more. If there is money out there that can be scrounged from the Town's coffers, it should be used for things that everyone in the Town needs, nothing else.

turning the town green into a skate park would be ideal. the town already owns it & it's just sitting there unused.

Unbelievable. I think that most people on this website have gone in front of TC or have written cordial letters to the Mayor. I for one have done both on more than one occasion. The fact is that if you are not in the Garden Club then you are treated with contempt, as if you dare to cross the all knowing all powerful TC. And letters are filed in that old circle bin called a trashcan. So in all honesty, unbelievable, this is the only place to be heard!

.. the sandlot baseball game has morphed into the big time (once again a reference to something how many years ago???) “Kids are used to parking lots and curbs(to which they are padded down if they use). Suddenly, to accommodate them, we need a whole new industry developed.”
A very nice condescending tone for all you whippersnappers, and parents of whippersnappers.
