The Town Green on a Sunny Summer Day Attracts No One
The Town Green (otherwise known as "The Maud Memorial") sits empty yesterday for another sunny summer weekend day. A $5 million dollar plus "postcard" park with zero recreational functionality, and just a few months after its launch, attracts no people. As Gomer says, surprise, surprise, surprise. When faced with the next ill-conceived, multi-million dollar pet project, will we as a community just trust the Ayr hill Garden Club again with our money?

I did notice about 50 people there for the swing band this past Wednesday at noon.
I guess for 10 "free" concerts a year, is worth it, eh?!

How many crumbling streets did those 50 people need to travel on to get to the Town Green, and how many of those streets could have been repaired with the millions that were spent on the TG?

what's with all those big plant pots now filling the pavement along the front of the park? if the idea is to plant flowers, why weren't flower beds part of the design? the pots look like nothing more than clutter. maybe it's part of the new "homeland security aesthetic"?

So I guess you decided to stay in and missed the fun time had by all...

Anne:
I guess someone in the Town decided we needed some sort of "protection" from Maple Avenue (re: big random pots) but they still cannot commit to a fence.
Perhaps, they could get a fence "sponsor" much like the "free" concerts.

>>the pots look like nothing more than clutter.
Agreed. They were not on the architect's plan. They ruin the open plaza space and presentation.
The flower trellis seem cheap and skimpy.
The crushed stone dust areas around the benches also look cheap and messy and don't fit with the more finished plaza elements of marble, stone, and bronze... but they do match the dark and dirty pavers look.
Most of the plaza elms are dead and dying.
I miss the artic blue sun shade over the stage... that splash of color would have tied in with the fountain and stood out well in Brown Town.

On Sunday at one thirty in the afternoon I had the occasion to sit at the light for the bike crossing on Maple Ave. Glanced over at the TG and noticed nobody. Has anyone noticed how the clearing of the area improved the view of the power line tower there?

re the powerline tower:
the plan calls for ornamental grasses & flowers to be planted at its base. Once those fill in, no one will notice the 100 foot tower.

Power lines?...get up early on a weekend starting at Maple and Nutley headed toward the heart of Vienna on 123. Right when you get to the crest of the hill where you can see all of Vienna to Tysons (around Maple and Pleasant)...look at all the power lines on both sides of the street as far as you can see. How do you sit on Council, how do you run this Town for 50 years, and make no effort to get rid of that? How do they not notice it?

Right, nothing I'd rather do on a 90+ degree day with 100% humidity at 1:30 is to sit in the sun (on the Green or anywhere else for that matter). I do miss the wedding dress shop so...

You are in luck - the wedding dress shop is still here. They were the only ones in town who could afford the very expensive rent in the new building by Joe's. That buyout from the town didn't hurt.

EVS worry not about wedding dresses. You will see many at the TG. That was the reason it was established, they didn't want the Wright Building to get into the pictures taken at the Freeman House.

Town green Friday night at the magic show. A good at least 150 person showing. Lots of kids lots of laughs lots of neighbors. What a horrid thing for a town to encourage....

I walked past during the show. I think 150 is a bit high; I estimated about half that number. Be that as it may, the more important point is that Glyndon Park or Nottoway would have served just as well as a venue.

They have $5M+ spent on the property, all the assorted ongoing expense money for marketing, Town Staff, etc...and with all of THAT money they get a 100 people to show up one night? Not exactly a success, but the larger issue is not this one event, but what will be the ongoing utilization of Maud's park? An event here or there, that justified all of the money spent when there are no funds to even keep our roads repaired?

Well neighbor was it worth about $200+ for the show? Cause if you live in Vienna that is most likely what you paid for it!

In all my forays to and around the TG since it was dedicated I have seen less than ten persons there, except for a group of young people who ran out the park when an adult appeared. The weather had changed but not the attendance at the park.
