A Small Issue Indicative of a Larger Problem
Can anyone explain why the Town of Vienna in the course of building the Town Green, which required new curb and gutter along Mill Street, did not add a sidewalk along the entire block? How did they miss putting in a sidewalk?

Elementary, my dear Watson. They wanted the Town Green to be representative of the Town--which is missing sidewalks all over the place.

Pshaw to you and your fancy sidewalks!
This is Vienna! Our kids get Benzes before they're allowed to drive! Nobody walks, are you kidding?
Now, what we need in this town is a few more banks and nail parlors! Or, better yet, we could waste even more tax dollars on a terribly-planned, and quite pointless park. Especially now that our current Town "Green" has reached the height of it's potential.
Wake up, Town Cronies-- I mean Council. Town Council.

DON'T FORGET THAT MAUD'S THINKING IS BACK IN THE DAYS OF THE 1940's OR EARLIER WHEN "RUSH HOUR" COMPRISED MAYBE 10 CARS PER HOUR GOING IN THE SAME DIRECTION ON TWO LANE MAPLE AVE. PICTURESQUE PERHAPS, BUT HARDLY PRACTICAL IN THE 2000's.

The Town was installing new sidewalks with accessibility ramps surfaced with pebbles. Now instead of pebbles they are using red square tiles with raised bumps (see Tapawingo and Glyndon). How come they don't have one standard figured out for this... it's 2007! Is this another small issue indicative of a larger problem?

Dog - Actually those 'red squares with bumps' are an ADA item for detectable warning. It was very common to use exposed aggregate (ramps with pebbles) for handicap ramps. That is for traction. In the last few years there was a change over to include the inserted pavers with the detectable warning area for the blind. The requirements for this were suspended for some time by the Federal government but this is now back in place. This will be the ‘new’ standard (few years now), not just in Vienna.
