Mayor Jane Seeman Blows a Kiss
From the Sun Gazette:
Vienna's burgeoning sidewalk-construction program got a boost on July 24 when the U.S. House of Representatives approved $100,000 for these projects...Vienna Mayor M. Jane Seeman said she was pleased by the federal contribution. "I'm thrilled to death," she said. "That's going to be very valuable in helping us move forward with our next phase of sidewalk building." Vienna's Sidewalk Subcommittee in March identified $8.4 million worth of needed sidewalk projects.
Jane Seeman gets 1% of the needed monies from Davis and is "thrilled". How does $100,000 allow anything when the bill is $8 million plus? Not that Davis is responsible for our sidewalks, that's not the point. But Seeman is clearly in over her head. Blowing public kisses doesn't get sidewalks built.

Comments
Tom Davis is giving Vienna enough money for roughly 455 feet of sidewalk (based on $220/linear foot).
Not quite enough for my favorite trouble spot:
* A 625-foot area along Orchard Street, N.W., between Lewis Street and Windover Avenue.
At this point, who even cares if we get 100 grand. It's worthless. I guess anytime that the local politicians can have a public "make-out session," it's all worth it.

If Miss Jane is "thrilled" that she is getting only 1% of the sidewalk money she needs, do you suppose she will let us all get away with paying only 1% of our Town real estate tax? I suspect she would HISS instead of kiss, if we all tried that.

This just cements the relationship of the Mayor and TC with Tom Davis and his wife Jeanmarie who is running for election in November. How much do you want to bet that this money is going to go towards Maple Ave sidewalks and not desperately needed neighborhood ones? Just watch!

The town seems to go begging for federal or state grants any time it needs streets or other major infrastructure, which are typically a local expense. It doesn't pay for schools, which are usually the biggest municipal cost. What happens to all the town tax revenue?

Wake up, the money is to repair the Town Green, sidewalks that will be torn up to replace the trees.

Soooo, let me get this straight, just follow whose a** has red lip stick, and you will see who Mayor Boob is kissing up to?

Anne a lot of money is going towards retirement of Town employees. I for one and still a bit miffed that Mr. King who retired from Fairfax only to come to Vienna; and after mucking up the works here is receiving a pension from the Town as well. I have to wonder what does being a Town give US?

Anne Smith: Please do not muddle the tax picture of Vienna.. Vienna pays for schools as taxpayers to Fairfax County. The Vienna taxes do not include schools although the City of Fairfax which has a contract with the County to provide schooling, pay their school taxes to the City. Vienna taxpayers also pay for the County Police Force and in fact all County services.

Someone has to do it:
yes, i understand that the Vienna TAXPAYERS do pay for schools because they also pay county taxes. my point is that the town's tax revenues are significant and are not used for much. I was questioning where taxpayers' hard-earned dollars are going, since the Vienna budget doesn't include many services. but the previous poster did point out that the town has its own police force, and has to cover retirement costs for employees. still, i wonder how much oversight there is.

Wait. Hang on.
The Police Force gets paid?
That's it. I'm quitting my job and becoming a police officer. The ultimate job. Sitting around doing nothing all day, maybe harassing some town residents for no legal reason, getting other county departments to catch our criminals, and getting paid all that money! Plus bribes! I could work for a year and retire happy!
Also, Anonymous, you got it in one.
Although, I must deduct several brownie points for lack of a creative name.
