Pedestrian Safety Courtesy of Momma Red Hunter

Given the fact that NOTHING takes place in Vienna when it comes to Maple Avenue's congestion and or safety, we were surprised to find Momma Jane Seeman's thoughts on traffic at her son's blog. Follow along Vienna citizens and feel secure that these windbags are making decisions for our welfare. First Tom Seeman opines:

Is it just me, or is there an epidemic of jaywalking in our country? Yes that's right, Jaywalking. I cannot drive around anymore without seeing people running across some fairly busy streets. The mainstreet of my little town is one of those four-lane roads, with businesses on each side, with a turning lane down the middle of the street. Undivided, you know what I mean. Every quarter mile or something there is a stoplight, and the speed limit is maybe 35mph but you know how that goes. And half the time I'm downtown some idiot is running across the street, as often as not young parents with little children in tow. Now mind you there's a crosswalk not more than a hundred feet away. And I've seen this too on busier roads than this. Now mostly, and this is just a personal observation, most of the jaywalkers are Hispanic. If this is accurate, and it might not be, is this the result of cultural or socio-economic factors? Or is it the result of a general breakdown of an attitude towards law-and-order? Maybe it's just me, but when I was a kid it was inconceivable that I'd do anything other than cross at the crosswalk. But then, we also called adults "Mr" or "Mrs" in those days, too, which is something else that seems to have gone by the wayside. So tell me, do you notice this where you live too, or is it just me?

Jane Seeman the Mayor of Vienna responds:

tom--Jaywalking is rampant you're right. I have not observed any one group breaking the law tho. People then complain about how bad the traffic is, they can't even cross the street! "We need to have more pedestrian-friendly streets." Often it is families all strung out or maybe a mother with a couple of kids. The crosswalk or intersection could be close by too. The solution is to have fences along all the sidewalks with cutouts only where people have the right to cross. But that is unsightly and not practical. In DC a jaywalker was recently ticketed. He had been hit by a car when jaywalking. He died later and of course the police got a bad rap. People have to take more responsibility and practice what they preach to their children--cross at an intersection, look both ways, look both ways again, then cross. -ma

Isn't that special? The Mayor of Vienna has now said more on her son's extreme website about traffic safety than she has ever said in her capacity as Mayor of Vienna. Go Momma Red Hunter!

No Hispanics in the Seeman Family Portrait!

Comments

I don't know about Hispanics having the market on jaywalking - that's a rather bold (re: ignorant) statement to make.

Vienna has an epidemic of postal workers jay walking! I'm guessing they are forced to park behind Tara Thai because there isn't adequate parking for employees at M&C's Post Office. In the evenings, you see postal workers running across Maple Avenue in front of Eckerd's to get to their cars.

Totally different subject, but did you know that Eckerd is becoming Rite Aid?!

Thanks Mayor Jane, you have now explained why the Town Green has no fence along Maple Avenue.

A picture of the daily running of the postal workers across 123 would be nice.

"In DC a jaywalker was recently ticketed. He had been hit by a car when jaywalking. He died later and of course the police got a bad rap."

What is the Mayor of Vienna saying here?

I often travel along Uno Dos Tres, and I have never seen many peoples getting hit by cars, even when I J Walk.

The solution is to have fences along all the sidewalks with cutouts only where people have the right to cross. -Mayor Jane Seeman

So that's your solution, huh Jane? That explains why the sidewalks along Maple Avenue are lined end-to-end with those obnoxious raised planters... Mayor Jane and her minions on Town Council put them there to impede jaywalkers. What a bunch of {...]s! Vote, Vienna!

It is my understanding that people are being struck crossing on the WOD at Maple Avenue where there is a crossing light. There are no means to protect the black sheep that crosses there.

I'm not surprised. Mayor Jane has said some super stupid things in the past. For instance, when asked at a community forum last year how she was going to manage the increase in side-street traffic, Jane said to the group, "I'll agree not to drive on your street if you'll agree not to drive on mine."

Classic Jane.

Heard it, that may be the wisest thing the Mayor ever said.

Didn't you run the same clip from the Red Hunter last year? (May 21, 2006, to be precise)

If you've run out of things to complain about, how about telling us how your lawsuit's coming along?

Please stop reminding those of us who should know better about what a {...] our Mayor is. And, don't bring up that pesky [gang] crap anymore either. It's all nonsense. We should only discuss your lawsuit with the corrupt Town.

Its always nice to see the Seeman kids stop by for a little blogging...thanks for coming "Re-run" and "yeah, stop this nonsense!" ... it will be fun to see "Mom" handling herself this fall as events unfold ... little bit different than handing out library cards!

Referencing blog posts from Jan 2006... nothing but the most recent town news! Of course, anyone who may call HV on it will just be considered Maude and Jane family members.

And what is up with the lawsuit, anyway?

Referencing blog posts from Jan 2006... nothing but the most recent town news!

The Mayor's son posts racist comments at his site and the Mayor of Vienna responds there to explain her views on pedestrian traffic. No news there!

Mighty self-righteous talk coming from someone who's working like crazy to drum up fear of Latinos. I particularly like this comment you published:

Why the h**l should I have to press #1 for English?

Posted by: EOE | August 17, 2007 06:06 PM

Now explain to me how that's a comment on illegal immigration, and not just a racist rant?

Likewise, it was pathetic how you hyped the recent felony assault in NW Vienna, publishing breathless comments from someone who just couldn't wait to find out if the guilty party was an immigrant, and then deleted the entire posting when someone else pointed out that the police had issued a warrant for a man with an Anglo surname. Crime only matters to you if it's committed by a certain ethnic group?

And you did all this in the past few weeks, not a year and a half ago. And you continue to ignore the fact that the mayor's comment from a year and a half ago said that she didn't see any particular demographic as being prone to jaywalking.

Since there are so many new readers everyday, HV is obligated, IMO, to repost clips of the Red Hunter website and Jane's responses. We cannot ignore it. What is that old adage about history repeating itself?

Some things bear repeating.

This site is hilarious.

You've put all of the things I never could really put my finger on about what bothered me about living in Vienna made me see the reality.

Yes, the town square is UGLY. Yes, traffic on 123 is horrible.

Yes, the 4th of July fireworks display is ridiculous for a small town. It scares the crap out of my dog every year and we lived on Moore - a half mile away. Yes, the sidewalks are entirely too narrow. Yes, taxes in Vienna are entirely too high. All of it is true.

Keep it coming. You're entertaining the Hell out of us down here. We can't wait to come back in 2 years to see that wacky place again.

LoboTommy-

Didn't say it wasn't news-worthy... but Jan 2006 ain't news!

Reminder-

Didn't see anything in the blog post noting this was a repeat. The date on the post is 8/25/07 and it's written as if this is something new. If we're reminding everyone, let's note that. It's certainly valid that it's an offensive statement.

How many Vienna residents know that these two morons had this online conversation? The guess is not many. I hope someone reposts this interchange every month until Seeman leaves office. She and her {...] son are a disgrace.

I'm guessing "kidding" and "my stuff" are the same informed reader. Did you read the post regarding Ceder Lane-or is that not a problem either? To report news is bashing? We can disagree about a lot of things, but to ignore the safety of our Town is absurd and egotistical on the part of the Mayor and TC; and to pull this divisive rant is more proof of how power is kept in this town.

"And you did all this in the past few weeks, not a year and a half ago. And you continue to ignore the fact that the mayor's comment from a year and a half ago said that she didn't see any particular demographic as being prone to jaywalking."

Are you trying to say that this interchange did not happen, or because it is a past statement should be ignored, OR because it was not in a Vienna rag it does not count and thus should be ignored? A leader is a leader no matter where they are.

I live on Patrick St., and I'm relieved that other people in town are waking up to the fact that we have gang and other crime problems in our area.

FYI, I have talked to the police about it, and they treat me like I'm just an irritant. They've told me and other people in my neighborhood that its none of our business what's going on, and that they'll notify us, if it's something that we need to know.

And now they're looking for help in finding three violent gang members in our community - two months after the fact.

Thanks a lot.

You are obviously not a NW resident. If you were, you would know about the houses involved in these arrests. No one around here was guessing it was an illegal immigrant incident. We all know what goes on in our part of town.

And, it feels like a blind eye is turned.

Sorry, I'm not "My Stuff don't stink"...

I think that crime is a valid concern (in general, not related to illegal immigration), but this thread is about a 2006 blog posting about jaywalking. What does that have to do with real crime?

I would say the point would be that years are going by and nothing gets done in this Town unless it is sanctioned by a certain group otherwise too bad, and as it happens crime seems to be on that "too bad" list.
