Dennis Adams: The Usual "Half the Story"
From the Sun Gazette comes a brief bit from Dennis Adams. He is the leading advocate against the Berry Street condos:
"...Dennis Adams, who lives at 210 East St., S.E., said the parking lots behind commercial buildings occupied by SunTrust Bank, Anita's “New Mexico-Style” Mexican Food and Karin's Florist have served as a transitional area since 1963."
What Adams failed to mention is that the current owner of by SunTrust Bank, Anita's “New Mexico-Style” Mexican Food and Karin's Florist can build a new and expanded commercial building incorporating the so called "transitional area" (which Dennis failed to mention is zoned commercial). So where does his argument go then? Forget the specifics of this case, like in the historic district, it's not uncommon for older, politically active Vienna residents to show up and say anything to get their way. As long as disingenuous arguments are laid out, Berry Street or wherever, this site will exist to expose hypocrites like Dennis Adams.

Comments
No one has addressed it, but clearly Vienna is burdened by the group think of retired government employees (not all by any stretch, but many). Nothing else explains the "fight" against everything, while at the same time everything is changing nonetheless. They seem sickly satisfied to win little fights, even if in the long run change comes anyway. Unfortunately, the younger people still engaged have created a vacuum with their lack of political participation. And look who has filled it...

Dennis will scream & holler but when the time is right, he will sell his $117k 30-year-old investment for 800k. He'll cash out and move on to "cheap" NC to live in his brand new home on a golf course. They all do eventually. They screw with people's lives as long as they can till they are ready to leave.

Maud and Charlie conceived and created the Transitional Zone ordinance to establish a 200-foot buffer area between commercial and residential zones. The Transitional zone is designed to provide a smooth transition between Commercial and Residential Zones. This Zone was designed specifically for pieces of property like Berry Street. Any land zoned Transitional must be surrounded by a six high masonry wall. All Transitional zoned land has been granted 75 to 80% lot coverage. This modification is necessary because Maud and Charlie forgot that parking must be available for the building footprint. If you review the zoning ordinance you will see that if a piece of land is zoned Transitional, the commercial intrusion into the residential zone is very effectively blocked. I do not understand why Maud will not explain to the Berry Street residents that she created this zone specifically for this type of property. Maud has a responsibility to allay the residents’ fears instead of inflaming them. The Transitional zone is a well written and has done its job. It is time for Maud and the TC to stop playing politics and explain to the citizens that the Transitional Zone Ordinance was designed to PRESERVE the single-family residential charter of the Town and is an effective land use control. The Transitional zone is a well-written ordinance and has done its job well throughout the Town.
