Jammin Java Safety?

An article submitted by a reader:

Picture it... a standing room only late night crowd; loud music; low lighting; one entrance cluttered with tables, chairs, railings, flower pots, bar-b-que grills, and assorted other hardware store debris; maybe an exit in back if you can find it; and a hardware store next door stuffed to the ceiling with combustible merchandise... is Jammin Java a fire trap?

As the owner of Jammin' Java, I assure you that Jammin' Java is never a "fire trap". As a business operating in Vienna, we are subject to routine inspections by the fire marshall. If there is ever a problem, it is a minor one, and we fix it right away. The safety of our patrons is of the highest concern to us, and we are pro-active in our effort to ensure that we comply with the fire code. Feel free to get in touch with me directly any time you have a concern about anything related to Jammin' Java. I am always available.

Thanks for the post Daniel. I am sure the author of that article will appreciate you addressing the issue head on.

I will admit, this has never been a concern of mine. Now a big concern is getting tickets to the Bob Schneider show in December. :-)

Why would you publish this and slam a local small business owner? What was the point of this?

A poster who has been posting here for a long time, someone not affiliated with this site, and someone not known by us, submitted the article. That person has written extensively on this site with well articulated positions and extremely strong insights into Vienna. We had asked for submissions, and he/she submitted that. It's essentially a letter to the editor. Do you think it should have been censored?

The fire trap question was posed in the best interest of public safety, not to slam a small business. I am of the opinion that under worst-case conditions (when disasters tend to happen), Jammin Java does not have sufficient emergency exits. I appreciate that the owner may be forthright and well-meaning, and that the fire marshall is satisfied (as he was at the Vienna fireworks display), but I still think one front door for a hall of people next to a packrat hareware store is inadequate. It would cost almost nothing to install a side emergency exit facing the Safeway parking lot.
