Vienna Town Green: The Biggest Waste of Money in the History of the Town of Vienna

From a reader:

"I rode by the Town Green two times today - at 10:30am and 12pm - and it was completely empty. A beautiful, 80 degree Saturday afternoon and not ONE person on the Town Green. Seriously, not even a tired biker resting? What a waste of money."

An 85 year old woman named Maud fed her ego with millions of tax dollars. The Vienna Town Green is the biggest waste of money in the history of the Town of Vienna.

This area is quite a window into the spirit of Vienna itself. Vienna is dying and to try a fix it with a face-lift, so to speak, by taking from the crippled businesses and commercial lands to construct a fanciful Town Green, (as if Maud Robinson has called it this to convince you that that what it is) could be the thrust of the sword that will kill Vienna. You cannot run a town that is dying and continue to push it further into the ground by raising taxes, restricting growth, and preventing the necessary zoning changes that is the only way any medicine or cure can be used to allow the town to survive.

I don't want Vienna to change into Herndon, Reston, Falls Church, Fairfax or any other municipality, but without the required changes in our outdated zoning restrictions, no one will be able to invest in Vienna to keep it from being a go-through town with just low grade businesses, gas stations, and banks.

The future is in the Voting Booths, yet it appears that Vienna's inevitable voting corruption and manipulations are keeping the killers in power, and it appears they have a very good reason to do so. Corruption doesn't start at the top, but a senile and imbecilic government that turns a blind eye on it's corruption is the poison that allows this town to die a slow painful death. So, people are often only given relief through lawsuits against such a corrupted group.

How may lawsuits are there against Vienna at the moment, and how much is this costing?

The reality is simply, that our government officials stupidly think that they know more than you do, and that the Town Green is good for Vienna, and that a $25,000 laser show is better than traditional fireworks. Is this due to another lawsuit, I have to wonder?

It isn't this website that is killing Vienna or as one of the imbecilic residents who cried out that any change to the historic district would be the end of Vienna, no more parades, 4th of July, or walks on the hill... no, it's our own inept government that has had the only hand is killing Vienna.

So, if you see and empty Town Green, it is because Vienna is already dead or dying, and any semblance or window facing of activity has been manufactured by its own hand too; indeed by our own taxes.

I started reading this website about a year & a half ago. At that time, there were two new faces running for the town council. Of course they both lost badly. This year, I don't see anyone new running. Unfortunately, everyone knows that non-incumbents have no chance in this town.

Nothing posted by 'The Empty Town' hasn't been stated here before, in one form or another. There isn't one road in this town that doesn't need major repairs. And the repairs that are being made are pathetic. Look at the repair just recently made on Malcolm at Lawyers. Already worse than before the repair. Or the speed humps on Church. Already falling apart. Or the waste of a speed hump (weren't these called speed BUMPS back in the day?) installed on Walnut Lane, where you can't go any faster than 10 mph anyway! And let's not forget the price of water in Vienna. Highest in the area. The people posting here are not the audience this website needs to reach. It's the "500" that need to read this site. I'd like to see a Historic Vienna booth at the Community Center on May 6th. And 'anne smith': it could be that those "two new faces" were not the right faces for the TC. When I went to vote, both of those women were sitting under their tarps, giggling and carrying on instead of being out where they could actually meet people coming to vote. Not that I would have voted for Brehony anyway. I feel that the right "non-incumbents" COULD have a chance in this town. Assuming they could withstand the onslaught from the already entrenched pinheads running this town today.

Touche!! Looks like the 4th of July fireworks are gone without any help from anyone but the inept Mayor and TC.

I sure wish that these lemmings would stop putting the blame onto others and place it where it belongs, on the shoulders of the Mayor, TC and might I say voters!

The biggest problem cities have had was the lifeless downtown at night, or evenings. However, in Vienna it is administered to cause this by closing the center of town attraction at dark. Entry into the TG after dark will bring a charge of trespassing. Little problem since there are no one there even during the day. But.

It's Funny...huh? Most "parks" ACROSS THE COUNTRY close at dusk.

All small towns have their issues. Check out this article on Leesburg Downtow revitalization. http://www.loudountimes.com/news/2008/apr/22/leesburg-council-candidates-debate-best-way-revita/

"All small towns have their issues."

Yes, but some deal with them better than others. As the article notes, "In the last six months or so, Leesburg Town Manager John Wells has led the charge to change the town's image of being unfriendly toward businesses and land developers." So, it appears that Leesburg is far ahead of Vienna. And downtown Leesburg is also much more attractive than downtown Vienna. Their historic district is even, you know, historic.

Nice try Townie. You are speaking of a Town Green and not a park. Are any green areas in the District closed at dusk? What would the "old lamplighter" think?

Incorrect, Town Green is not the biggest waste of money in the history of Vienna. The very existence of Vienna is the biggest waste of maoney. McLean is not an incorporated town but has all the amenities that Vienna has w.o the added taxes. Mclean is governed from within although it is controlled by Fairfax County.
