When Will Vienna Get Cable Television?
Every so often, random people announce, while they like reading HistoricVienna.com, everyone who posts on here is crazy. It gets tiring after awhile.
Another town resident tried to start a warm fuzzy blog two years ago which fizzled out quickly since blogs work when the topics are controversial and the debate is heated.
Perhaps, if Mother Maud would let us have a television station, debates could take place in a more personal atmosphere with face to face discussion. Different types of programs could arise that would address many topics in town. But, to this day, not one member of Town Council believes we should have a cable television station.
Who in Northern Virginia is allowed to have a community channel?

I think this is response to my post of a few hours ago on the Wolf Trap Motel thread. This is sort of what I mean. You disagree with the majority here (the 10-12 kvetchers that someone else described) and you get absolutely blasted. That's not really a conversation. And it doesn't bother anyone - blaster or blastee - because it's anonymous. It doesn't seem productive, but maybe it helps to let off steam.
I like the idea of fall elections. I like the idea of less crime - arresting and deterring bad guys and targeting police where they're needed. I like the idea of ditching the TC incumbents. A cable tv station sounds like a good idea. In general, I LOVE the idea of government transparency. I also like living here. You can have it both ways. Don't some of you like it here? At all? You must care about this place, since you feel so passionately about the problems here.

Dear "I like Vienna,"
I'm at a loss for words..., I not only like Vienna, I love Vienna, I believe most who post here do too, The reason we come here is to get real facts and real answers, not BS the old hens at TC have been spoon feeding us. I want to proud of the place I call home. That doesn't just happen in this town, believe me it takes digging. We come here for the truth and by the way... we are not just complainers, some of us are doers.
You can thank us later, but for now there's work to be done.

I primarily blast people who don't know what they are talking about, not because they disagree. Sorry, but I don't exist in a touchy feely world where everyone has an opinion to be listened to. If you don't get the issues, then stop, read and learn...before tossing out strong opinions.

I'm truly glad to hear that, Truth or Dare.
Mr. Man, anyone who disagrees with you gets nailed as "someone who doesn't understand the issue." Reasonable minds can differ. So, back to cable tv - what do you think about it? I'm for it - it's a fabulous idea. How did Herndon/Falls Church/et al get it? Petition?

There are people on HV.com who have fervently fought against the Beulah Road mulching, traffic, illegal immigrant gangs and crime. There are people on here who have spent their time meeting with the big time developers to get discussions going. And, alas, people here have ran for office.
So, no, people are not just sitting on here and whining. But, when you keep hitting brick walls, you realize your time is precious and you must still show for a job, take care of your children and enjoy yourself.
The machine Maud Robinson set up 50 years ago is still just as strong today. It is DISGUSTING. My town, which I love, too, is turning into a gross wasteland.

Amazing, while you try to criticize, you make my point. There is no petition authority in State law for this ding dong. The Council is elected by the people of Vienna. The Council doesn't want TV. And yes, no kidding that it is a fab idea, but can you take the rose colored glasses off for a minute, turn the Peter, Paul and Mary peace, love and harmony music off...and join us in the real world? So, again, thanks for making the point very clearly that you don't get what the lay of the landscape is.

ok, Mr. Man. why don't you just TELL us morons how to fix the problems here? Or better yet, don't tell us - just fix them yourself, since you know all the answers, and give us a little pat on the head when you're through. You're exactly like I imagine Maud to be in person - a crabby geezer. What I hear you saying is the problem can't be fixed. Over and over and over. Keep it up - you're hilarious.

I Like Vienna:
No one needs to tell you what to do. You know what needs to be done. Are you going to be the one to pick up where others on here have left off. Do you want to try to stick your neck out at a Town Council meeting and have Maud Robinson publicly ridicule you? This is a favorite of hers.
Unfortunately, people here think Vienna is just good enough to put up with the Town Council and Mayor's bullsh%t. They are not nice people and do not want to do good things for Vienna.

Mr. Man = Historic Vienna.
Carry on.

Of course that is what you hear, but we have already discussed your inability to "get" Vienna politics.
Clearly, I am saying:
1. Change elections to fall.
2. Work to constantly keep instances of incompetence and corruption profiled on this blog.
3. Get people who think beating Maud's machine is as easy as "hey everybody let's run a candidate" to undestand where efforts need to be concentrated to make change in Vienna. One non-incumbent candidate has won a seat on Vienna Town Council since 1976. One. And that was 1992 or 1993. That said, Maud will not live forever.

I have been doing research on this topic and Granicus,Inc is amazing. Take a look at the presentation they did for Sarasota and tell me we don't deserve to have that in Vienna. The amount of clients and municipalities is awesome. I don't know how many of you have ever tried to listen to past meetings, or tried to obtain information from Town Hall, but it is embarrassingly archaic.
Honestly what is the reason that we do not have this? It can't be the cost as some would like you to believe. The cost $36,000 start up fee. I truly believe that we need accessible access to public information, and we are not getting it.

Does anyone know how old Maud and Seeman are?
I'm just wondering how much stamina I need to muster up. We all know Maud will not leave till they hall her dead body out of the Building!!
Posted by: truth or dare | July 30, 2008 01:43 PM
Maybe I'm wrong, but hasn't the town been getting money all these years from the cable company (or is it Verizon?) to pay for taping the public meetings?

"Mr. Man = Historic Vienna"
Yes, I just figured that out. Oh well...
Posted by: I like Vienna | July 30, 2008 08:46 PM
I love Vienna and I also like Maude and Jane. I hope they live forever.
I couldn't care less if Vienna has TV or not. AS IF I ever watch the board of supervisors. I'd probably watch Vienna TV almost as often, never.

SWMom,
you do not appear to be a civic minded person involved in town affairs but more so a Maudite. Now perhaps I am wrong and the reason you do not want TV is because you attend all Town Council Meetings.

For Vienna not to have cable TV is a travesty reflected by the fact that all other surrounding jurisdictions are providing it for their citizens. The blame for this travesty lies not only with the Town of Vienna but also with the County and State officials who allow them to slight their constituents.

FWIW, the carriers (Cox, Verizon) are mandated to provide legitimate public entities (i.e. ToV) cable air time. If there is a fee, it is to be on a cost basis. This was mandated by the FCC. The ToV has very little reason not to participate on cable TV.
