I See Dead Buildings.
"Where are all the boarded up buildings and flop houses?"
- SW mom
HistoricVienna.com took this comment on as the challenge of the week. We found our inner-George Lovelace and took a tour of Vienna.

A few from HistoricVienna.com reader:

Next week's challenge is for you: how many "For Lease" signs do you spy in Vienna?

I see people leaving; why put up with the nonsense? Hunter Mill here I come. No nonsense town council out Lawyers Rd. to run the place into the ground.

The BP gas station is not boarded up. I also believe that the store in the picture above that is Vienna\'s newest mattress store, so that must be a somewhat dated picture. I\'m not sure what I\'m seeing in the Moseley\'s Hot Tubs picture.

The Internet:
That's the old Shell station, not BP.
It looks like BP or Wachovia is up for sale.

How about for the next challenge a list/photos of the flop houses or boarding houses as a way of better defining the problem. I know there's one on Kelley Street

You sound like someone who will do or say anything to prop up the nonsense that is Vienna government. Let us guess: you have a relative who receives a salary from Vienna?

Shouldn't be a surprise that the BP station could go away.... how can they stay in business selling gas for 20 cents per gallon more than the Sunoco down the street?
That said, there's been a lot of stores emptying out... but the same is true elsewhere in NoVa.

We had a flophouse forming on the corner of Kingsley/Cottage in SW Vienna about 1.5 years ago. Luckily neighbors made a big stink including taking pictures of the various people coming and going. The VPD was at the house and in the area alot for a few months and made it uncomfortable enough for the "residents" that it seems now they only have a few people living there. I was impressed with the VPD and pleased to see that pressure from tax-paying residents can make a difference. If you live near one of these places, MAKE A STINK and make it uncomfortable for those living there. I am happy to share our town with tax-paying legal immigrants, the rest need to go!!
