Do Nothing Council? Not So Fast!

From the throw away papers comes this piece of special writing:

"A resident complained of "arrogant" bikers who ignore the rules of the road, including that of crossing public streets. Councilwoman Maude Robinson agreed with the resident that some bicyclists did present ongoing safety problems. To improve the safety of the crosswalk of the W & OD Trail on Church Street, near Freeman House, the council approved the request to omit or move parking spaces on Church Street. The last parking space closest to the crosswalk will be removed."

Way to go Maud! Nice job! We think your efforts here are just incredible. To think that you have had a hand in Vienna politics from the Civil War to today is just awesome.

Remember how much railed against the cyclist who was killed? She made sure there was no memorial on her "green"...so not suprising she is ripping bikers. Remember people of Vienna, its not cars that are the problems...but bikers! The bag is a nut!

Speaking of memorials I was just in the "park" across from Louise Archer and there is a memorial plaque for Taylor who was killed at VT. In seeing that today I thought it was a very lovely thing to do, and to place it near the Schools she attended was fitting.

I am just wondering though why the cyclist, also a citizen of Vienna, who was killed did not get the same remembrance? I'm sure it would have offered his wife and child some solace to see a tribute paid to his life as well. It is just too bad the Mayor and TC are so selective in who's life they place as more important. In my belief they all are equally treasured by those that loved and cared about them; and should be remembered by a Town that they called Home.

I have for years complained about the closeness of the parking spaces to the bike path. At the same time I also brought it to their attention that the railings on the bridge from the bike path to the Freeman House, over the creek, was unsafe. The spacing of the rails would fail to protect a child. The drop is about ten feet.

Yes Maud is correct about foolish bikers. To pit a bike against a four thousand pound vehicle is foolish. Same goes for pedestrians.

Wow. I agree that Maude has some issues with cyclists, based upon comments she's made over the years at Town meetings.

Since the Vienna Police have put up a "you are going X mph" sign on Park (where I've been almost taken out a couple times by inattentive boobs who are going at X+? and on their cell phones), I've got to think the problem is shared between cyclists and drivers. I've seen a couple drivers (I'm nice, but I do take down their plates just in case) who frequent the Cedar and Park Street crossings at lunch time and who seem to have particular issues with stopping and then starting up without warning.

There was a bike accident on Church Street in the spring. Caused by a driver who pulled around a stopped car. I guess he just really wanted to hit that cyclist his fellow driver was letting across, LOL.

Driving in Vienna is a lot like the Gray Dawn episode of South Park. All the oldsters like Maude rushing to the Country Kitchen buffet. And the rest of us crossing the streets had better give way.

Time for Maude to retire.
