June 2009 Newsletter: Comment from the Council Table

In Appreciation
By M. Jane Seeman, Mayor of Vienna

On June 30, 2009, an era will end in Vienna. Councilwoman Maud F. Robinson will step down from her seat on the TownCouncil.

Maud and her late husband, Charles A. Robinson, Jr., began their association with the Town in 1951 when they moved into their home on Courthouse Road, S.W. The couple quickly began their active participation by attending many Town Council and Town board and commission meetings. It wasn’t long before Charlie was appointed to the Planning Commission, then the Board of Zoning Appeals, and finally elected to the Town Council. Those years of service add up to 22 years. Then in 1976 Charlie was elected to the office of Mayor, which he held for 21 years. Those were very important years in Vienna’s development. Mayor Robinson was instrumental in drafting the Town’s Architectural Review Board ordinance and the Town Charter.

Mayor Robinson’s influence and stature did not stop in the town. Even today, respect for his leadership and contributions are acknowledged at every level of government.

But for us in Vienna, we have Mayor and Mrs. Robinson to thank for their vision of what we all strive for and work toward: a Vienna that has retained its small-town residential character. Their vision was for a Vienna that valued its trees, friendly businesses, and safe neighborhoods.

Now, was Maud Robinson sitting idly by when all this was going on? No indeed. Maud was busy in her own right. She was a member of the Board of Architectural Review and worked hard to maintain high standards in our business district. She served on the Town/Business Liaison Committee so that businesses and residents could meet and talk over ideas. She was involved in historic preservation projects and is a long-time board member of Historic Vienna, Inc. She was out and about town, always listening and engaging residents to find out their issues.

Maud attended all Town Council meetings and in 2000 was appointed to Council. Maud was elected to four more productive terms and then decided it was time to step down.

Maud and Charlie always had Vienna’s best interests at the forefront. Together they had a clear vision and a respectful way of carrying that vision forward. Without their commitment to that vision, Vienna would be a very different place. We all have them to thank for the excellent quality of life we enjoy in this unique and wonderful town.

There is a way to thank Councilwoman Robinson. An open house is planned for Saturday, June 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Flame Room of the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department. Everyone is invited to stop by and thank Maud for her years of service to the town that she and Charlie loved from the minute they moved here 58 years ago.

IT SHOULD READ:

Maud Robinson has worked hard to keep black homes out of the historic district. It doesn't matter why? It only matters that she is prejudiced against allowing the real long standing black historic homes out of the Historic District. Call that fair? No. She may have presented a front of leadership for her white friends and neighbors, but what has she done for everyone else?

Nothing. That's not what I call anything for thanks for a women who I consider racially biased against blacks. Go ahead and thank her for holding her head up high in disgust for the real historic landowners in Vienna, but I say, she deserves a long boo. She has never been a unifier, instead she has worked ever un-endingly to keep everyone divided and fighting amongst themselves as long as her close knit group of white friends got what they want in their private country club Ary Hill Historic District District.

That's not worth celebration, pomp, or circumstance, and I hope someone writes a book or something really exposing her for the curmudgeon she really is. To her close friends, she's their bulldog, but because she has a ipso facto close group that does not get along with the majority of Vienna Residents, and she has done nothing in her demeanor to lessen her harshness, ill will, irascibility, she will remain, forever a person that will not be remembered for anything that is truly good for Vienna, Virginia. Go ahead and name even the Town Green after her, and that still won't change the fact that she was more a divider than a uniter [unifier].

But methinks, she never wanted to be a unifier, she only wanted to produce a legacy of what in her New England Mind could be defined as greatness, no matter how off base her gray cells are at any age. Reason? Who knows why, maybe it's simply because she never had any children to grow old with. Sad, but true, she could be ornery just because she's never had anyone tell her how out of line she is that she would be inclined to truly listen to, such as a son or daughter. She's has to be accountable to no-one but the voices in her NEW ENGLAND ridden mind. Call her a Virginian? Hell No. No Virginian would ever, ever treat people the way she did. A true Virginian might not agree with you, but they would have sat down with you and really listened to you and not just stalking around with a bully attitude of always getting her way, and to hell with anyone else.

That is the MAUD ROBINSON I know. Read her hand written letters, and you will see a person who's maniacal mind keeps her from feeling compassion and humility.

She's gone from VTC, but until her dynasty dies, she will still protect her power like a troll under a bridge, her bridge being her puppet ridden VTC. A longer legacy would be a book, that would not be preceded by "auto"...

Get a quiet voice without the threat of a beating or voice thrashing, and I predict, people who have known her for years will eventually come out and tell you the same thing I've witnessed in her behavior. Mark my words, she will never be remembered as a shining leader for anything Vienna. (Google will never permit that. She will be known as the type of person who allowed the VTC to belittle, humiliate and insult a Veteran of the United States Military, and she sat back and smiled.

Simply because she did not want to hear of anyone asking for more safety and sidewalks in our side streets for our children to walk to school. Who dares come before me and ask for sidewalks! Give them cake, she said, as they laughed and chided this honorable resident. I don't think that is worth celebrating. [the give them cake is not what she said, but that was her attitude, like Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen, but if you shorten her name, it comes out Maud, really, it does, go ahead and google it... ;) ]

Cheers.

I don't get your reference to her "New England Mind". From My research it would be more the "Smith College Mind". You say to GOOGLE the Robinsons. I am amazed that two people of their prominence could avoid appearing in Google except in Town of Vienna documents. I was led to believe that Mayor Robinson served on many boards of Vienna Business. Not a peep in GOOGLE. Think about it you will be amazed. As far as their prominence in Virginia, it is based on their political prowess and not for what they were doing for Vienna. Nobody outside of town could give a damn what happened here. In other words, they could get out the vote for State and National candidates and for that they were honored.

Maudie is nothing more than an elitist busybody Smithie social worker. I have seen several like her in other jurisdictions around the Beltway. Things could be worse, the 30-something and 40-something Smithies are impossible. Hope one of them doesn't take up where Maudie left off.

Mrs Robinson has been nothing more than kind and forthcoming to me. She helped me to understand that I could not make my voice call for value and change/growth in our Town. I'm so sorry for trying, and sad that I appear to have failed! It is so apparent that all I (we) hoped for is not to be!

VIVA VIENNA!! And VIVA the new Council Members!

Good Luck and God Speed!l

That's exactly what I mean. If anything of a real legacy is going to be read and viewed by anyone in the future, it will be because of sites like this. and for they could get out the vote for State and National candidates and for that they were honored... you have got to be kidding. Nobody of significance gives a damn about what Maud's side is on state and national issues.

Do you think any of her Ayr Hill dummies, i.e. Laine Hyde, Joan Lillis, Chuckie Anderson and his wife, Howard Springsteen, and people like this will ever aspire to true greatness? Not on your life. These people are too witless, and too driven by greed and petty sophism to be truly great leaders, either locally or in any level. It's as if they are driven by some past nagging motive for power over petty local issues that makes them think they are leaders, but alas, they are giants in their own minds only, outside, they are to be laughed at for the clowns they are, and not pitied for the cretins they are.

Sure, they can hold down a job, and even have the appearance of being great at doing what they were trained to do in their schooling, but nobody in their right mind would treat people like the way they do in Vienna, Virginia. These people are mean bullies who will lie and cheat to get what they want. They lie and say whatever they can get away with in their testimony in the VTC to in effect abuse the personal rights and liberty of ordinary citizens in this Town.

That is nothing to crow about. But until we get these meetings aired on cable, or we get a smarter voter electorate, or do something to lesson their apathy, we will have to deal with these foolish and incompetent simpletons. I wonder why anyone with half a brain would want to sit on VTC and deal with this sort of government, but, Vienna is not alone when it comes to electing the lowest bottom of the barrel citizens that are attracted to power and abuse for it's own reward, without any true vision for the responsibility they have.

WG, you missed the point. I did not wish to imply that Maud was important because of the issues but simply because she could get her Vienna Machine to vote as she wished in State amd Mational elections.

Vienna VA Resident - wow, nice diatribe. So now we know she was a racist, divider, anti-veteran, anti-child, childless, power hungry, New England thinkin', maniacal, beater and a bully. Did I miss anything? So, I'm just spit ballin' here, but don't think I'll run into you @ the open house?!

she could get her Vienna Machine to vote as she wished in State amd Mational elections.

I'm not sure how Maud's measly 1000 voters (if it is even that many) in the Town of Vienna make any impact in State and National elections. That is hardly the type of numbers campaigns slobber over.

Really?, how could you say they are not interested in one thousand votes when we know every vote counts. Did you follow the last town election? An undertaker was asked how he determined how many of the prayer cards to print. He said that a person usually has circle of friends and relatives of about two hundred and fifty. Now multiply that number by one thousand and see what the potential voting base is.

I also have, unfortunately, encountered several Maudies in positions of authority in other NoVa jurisdictions. All can be described in two words: Nasty Nannies.

Yup. You hit the nail on the head. Although I never said beater. The rest is quite to the point and accurate. why do you find that hard to believe?

New Thread? What would have happened if Barack Obama had lived with his grandparents as a teenager in Vienna Virginia instead of Hawaii?

No Brainer. Barack, aka Hussein, Obama would have been involved in multiple confrontations with the TOV PD for being a "suspicious person" in his own neighborhood, driving while black, consorting with progressive troublemakers, conversing with white women, and so on. Finally told to "leave town or else" by Assistant to Mayor Robinson for Minority Issues.

Speaking about gagging, last week the parent company of the Sun Gazette was purchased by its creditors who gave the SG and its other newspapers another $5 million to keep on printing the same-old same-old. Meaning press releases written by local-government employees.

Speaking of the Robinsons' Town Police Department, Mayberry was 45 years ago. This bloated bureaucracy should be disbanded and Vienna should be patrolled by the Fairfax County PD.

To quote Roy Clark - "Thank God and Greyhoud She's Gone".

Charlie Robinson saw fit to invite the Mayor of another jurisdiction to observe Vienna's council meeting. I don't remember the topic but Maud took the podium and voiced her strong opinion (use your imagination). When the visiting Mayor was informed of who exactly the speaker was he commented "We would never allow that in our town."

Would never allow what? Women speaking at council meetings?

The internet: Yes, Yes, that is what he meant.

You're the ol' lady from the society pages
From a small town somewhere I used to be
You owned the paper and a bunch of other stuff
That didn't appeal to me

OL' LADY, OL' LADY OL LADY, OL' LADY OL' LADY, OL' LADY OL' LADY, OL' LADY

The hospital plans (yer brother drew 'em all)
You ran the paper 'n Charity Ball
Every day on the third or fourth page
There you was. . .you was quite the rage
Somehow, you was all kinda cheap 'n wrong
Just like in a lotta small towns
Where folks like you
Hang around too long
And pass out jobs to yer relatives 'n such
So you all keeps a lot, 'n nobody else
Ever gets too much.. .to speak of. . .
So what? What can you say?
So long as the trash gets picked up
So long as the trash gets locked up
Just so the trash don't stack up
Some day you won't be on page three
Or page four anymore

OL'LADY, OL'LADY OL' LADY, OL' LADY OL' LADY, OL' LADY OL' LADY, OL' LADY
